The Tokyo Biennale 2025 has announced its open call for the “Social Dive” Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program, inviting international artists to immerse themselves in Tokyo’s vibrant urban landscape. This fully funded residency offers a unique opportunity to engage deeply with the city’s communities and culture through the lens of art.

What is the “Social Dive” Program?

“Social Dive” is an initiative that encourages artists to explore Tokyo not just as observers but as active participants. The program emphasizes the concept of “sanpo” (散歩), meaning “a walk” in Japanese, as a metaphor for exploration and connection. Artists are invited to wander through Tokyo’s diverse neighborhoods, interact with its residents, and create art that reflects these experiences. The aim is to foster new relationships and perspectives through the act of walking and engaging with the city’s social fabric.

Residency Details

Theme: “Shall we ‘sanpo’?” – Encouraging exploration and connection through walking.

Residency Period: Selected artists will be invited to Tokyo to develop and present their projects.

Support Provided:

Travel expenses (within limits).
Accommodation in Tokyo.
Coordination of venues for presentation.
Project development support fee.
Interpretation and translation assistance.

Artists should have a strong interest in socially engaged art and be willing to interact with Tokyo’s communities. The program seeks individuals who can offer unique perspectives on Japanese traditions and contemporary culture.

Application Process

Interested artists must submit the following materials:

1.Project Proposal: A detailed plan of the proposed art project (2 pages, A3 size, horizontal format).

2. Self-Introduction: An overview of past works and artistic approach (1 page, A3 size).

3. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Including education, career, exhibitions/projects, and residency experience.

4. Portfolio: Samples of previous work.

All documents must be in English or Japanese. The total file size should not exceed 2MB. Applications should be sent via email to the address provided in the official application guidelines.

Selection and Results

A selection committee comprising art professionals will review the applications. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of May 2025.
