FullyFuded Scholarship United Nations – Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2026

Discover a Life-Changing Opportunity to Shape Ocean Governance  you’re from a developing country, here’s your chance to take your career to the next level.

The United Nations – Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2026 is now open for applications—and it’s not just prestigious, it’s fully funded. This unique 9-month fellowship will take you from the halls of the UN Headquarters in New York to some of the world’s top academic institutions—all while building your skills, knowledge, and global network.

Let’s dive into the details of this incredible opportunity.

What is the UN – Nippon Foundation Fellowship?

Launched by the United Nations and funded by The Nippon Foundation of Japan, this fellowship is all about empowering professionals from developing countries who are working in fields related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea.

It’s designed to help mid-career professionals like you become more effective leaders—so you can return home and contribute to sustainable ocean governance that aligns with UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) and Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water).

How the Fellowship Works

The fellowship is divided into two main phases:

Phase 1 – UN Headquarters, New York (3 months)

From March to June 2026, you’ll be based in New York City, attending training sessions led by UN experts. You’ll learn about international legal frameworks and the workings of global ocean policy, and you’ll start developing your own research project.

Phase 2 – Host University (6 months)

From July to December 2026, you’ll conduct independent research at one of the world’s top partner universities. Institutions are located across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia—so you’ll gain a global perspective, guided by an academic supervisor.

Goals of the Fellowship

By the end of the fellowship, you’ll have:

A solid understanding of UNCLOS and international ocean governance.
Completed a 100-page research thesis on a topic relevant to your country.
Designed a practical governance matrix that can help shape policy back home.
Grown into a more informed, confident leader in marine affairs.
Built lifelong connections with fellow professionals and experts from around the world.

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship is open to professionals who meet these criteria:

Age 25–45 (at the time of application).
Hold at least a first university degree in a relevant field.
Currently working in a government agency, research institute, or NGO dealing with marine or ocean affairs.
From a developing State that is a Member of the United Nations.
Able to dedicate nine full months to the fellowship (it’s a full-time commitment).
Have a clear research idea aligned with your country’s national priorities.

Tip: The fellowship encourages gender balance and diversity. Women are strongly encouraged to apply.

What’s Covered? (Fully Funded Benefits)

Everything is taken care of so you can focus 100% on your learning:

Round-trip airfare (from your home country to New York, then to the host university, and back).
A monthly living stipend.
Accommodation, visa costs, medical insurance, and a book allowance.
All training and academic supervision costs.
