Government officials and mid-level professionals from developing nations have a rare opportunity to receive advanced training in ocean affairs and the law of the sea through the United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship. Important subjects covered by this fellowship include international legal frameworks, marine science, and sustainable ocean management best practices. Through practical research and academic mentoring, participants also acquire professional skills.
Fellows are expected to carry out independent study and write a thesis on a chosen subject. Following the fellowship, participants go back to their home countries to use what they’ve learned to develop projects that support sustainable ocean management under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, implement legal frameworks, and shape ocean policy.
